This is never more true, than when taking the holistic, whole body approach to stomach problems.

Food comes into your body …. And goes straight to your stomach - so food really will make a great deal of difference to the balanced workings of your stomach, and in turn, your general health…

It is a very common feature of western-style diets to:

  • eat too much
  • over indulge
  • or just eat the wrong kinds of food!

Lifestyle and Dietary Changes

  • One of the most basic holistic remedies, is a general care and attention to eat a healthy diet:

    • Include plenty of whole grains and fiber in your diet.
    • Include plenty of fresh or frozen fruit and veg in your diet
    • Avoid eating fat and sugar
    • Drink around 8 glasses of water a day
    • Avoid alcohol and caffeine
    • Check for any food allergies or intolerances - See my recommended test
    • Eat smaller portions
    • Chew your food well
    • Try to avoid drinking with meals – or a half hour either side of mealtimes
    • Try to sit down, relax and take the time to enjoy your meals
    • Address any other underlying stresses and strains in your life.

General Holistic Remedies for Stomach Problems

  • It is a good idea to look at the specific sections, on the particular stomach problem you are suffering with…
  • But I do find these general holistic remedies for stomach problems are very beneficial.
  • They work for many of the different conditions, and will generally improve digestion, and the condition and workings of the stomach.
  • Stomach problems and upsets can be helped by adding the following general holistic remedies and supplements to the diet:




Probiotics
Digestive Enzymes
Camomile
Peppermint
Marshmallow Root
Angelica
Ginger
Fennel
Stomach Tonic Herbal Mix

Recommended Products

Probiotics

  • These are ‘good bacteria’ – the types of bacteria that live in your digestive system and help your body with effective digestion.
  • Taking probiotics makes sure that there is a healthy level of bacteria in your gut.
  • The ‘good bacteria’ should outnumber the harmful bacteria, which can cause upset stomachs and digestive problems.
  • I frequently take probiotic supplements to top up my good bacteria.
  • This is particularly important:
    • After a course of antibiotics
    • If you are ill or run down
    • If you eat a lot of sugars and refined carbohydrates
  • These are easily taken in supplement form. Look out for supplements that contain
    • Lactobacillus (such as Lactobacillus acidophilus)
    • Bifidobacterium (such as Bifidobacterium lactis or Bifidobacterium longum)
  • You can also eat live yogurts or yogurt drinks which naturally contain probiotic bacteria

Digestive Enzymes

  • Making sure that you have enough digestive enzymes to digest your food properly is very important.
  • This can be a more common problem than you might think!
  • Supplements of digestive enzymes can really help with some stomach and digestive problems.
  • When I first changed my diet and began my holistic health plan, I used digestive enzymes. I did find them very helpful, in getting my digestion back into balance.
  • Look out for products containing Pancreatin or Bromelain.
  • You can also eat more pineapple as an excellent natural digestive aid – it contains natural digestive enzymes.

Camomile

  • This is a very soothing natural health remedy, for indigestion and an upset stomach.
    • Use 1 teaspoon of dried flowers in a cup of hot water
    • Steep for 10 minutes
    • Strain and drink 3-4 cups a day
  • It is particularly effective drunk before bed.

Peppermint

  • This must be one of the best holistic remedies for stomach problems.
  • I drink peppermint tea every day – just to relax and settle my whole digestive system, and help to digest my meals – and because it tastes so nice!
  • Tea bags are widely available in supermarkets and health food shops, or you can make your own:
    • Use 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a cupful of hot water
    • Steep for 10-15 minutes
    • Drink 3-4 cups per day – ideally after meals
  • Lemon balm can be used instead of peppermint – it has the same effect on the stomach, but is even more relaxing. I like to drink lemon balm just before bedtime, to help me to sleep.
  • Caution Do not take peppermint internally if you have heartburn or acid reflux - it will make these problems worse!

Marshmallow Root

  • This is very soothing to the stomach lining when irritated.
  • It also helps if you have a viral or bacterial infection.
  • Capsules are ideal to be taken, as the tea doesn’t taste that nice…!
  • If you do want to make the tea, though:
    • Use 1 teaspoon of dried root in a cup of hot water
    • Simmer for 15 minutes
    • Strain and drink a third of a cup three times a day (1 cup in total, just not all at once!)

Angelica

  • This is one of the best holistic remedies for
    • bloating
    • cramps
    • nervous indigestion
    • wind
  • Make a tea with:
    • 1 teaspoon of dried Angelica root, in a cupful of hot water
    • Steep for 10 minutes
    • Take one cup half an hour before meals, 3 times a day
  • Caution
    • Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding
    • May cause sensitivity to sun

Ginger

  • Ginger is one of the best holistic remedies for:
    • upset stomach
    • nausea
    • constipation
    • indigestion
    • wind
  • I love ginger tea, and drink it regularly. It is very warming.
  • Make a tea with:
    • A little ginger root, grated into a cupful of hot water
    • Steep for 10-15 minutes
    • Strain and drink up to 3 cups per day.

Fennel

  • Fennel is a great herb for wind and indigestion.
  • Use fennel seeds in your cooking, or take a small handful after meals, if you feel indigestion coming on.
  • Make a tea:
    • Use 2-3 cups of crushed seeds in a cupful of hot water
    • Simmer for 10-15 minutes
    • Strain and drink 1 cup per day

Stomach Tonic Herbal Mix

  • This tonic uses some of the most effective holistic remedies together, to aid digestion, and get the workings of your stomach back into balance.
  • To make the mix use:
    • 3g peppermint leaves
    • 3g fennel seeds
    • 1g turkey rhubarb
    • Pour on a pint of hot water
    • Drink 2 fl.oz. of the mix 3 times a day
