Causes of Stress
Your stresses can be physical stresses that you can do little about:
a noisy environment
pollution and environmental toxins
work or family pressures
a crying babay, ringing phone, noisy neighbours…etc.
Your stresses may also be internal stresses:
anxiety, and worrying about your problems
diet stressors:
allergies or food intolerances
vitamin and mineral deficiencies
sugar
caffeine – chocolate, coffee, tea, cola
salt
red meat and dairy produce
processed foods and additives
alcohol and drugs
cigarettes
health problems
You might not be able to change your situation, or the physical stresses you are subject to, but you can change the way you think or feel about them …. And the whole process of holistic stress management is to learn how to relax and to be less stressed!
It can be beneficial to face up to your problems head on. Just see if you can actually do anything about them, rather than just worry.
It is possible that simply taking a practical step and exploring all your avenues and options may show you that things aren’t actually as black and white as you first thought.
Look for compromises and long term approaches to your stresses.
I know how difficult it is not to get stressed, when faced with what is, without question, a stressful situation - my fiance’s cancer, and my own diagnosis of M.E. have both been very stressful periods of my life.
Just take your holistic stress management program gradually, one step at a time (don’t put pressure on yourself to de-stress instantly, and allow it to become another source of stress!). You will find you steadily learn to relax more, and cope better with your stresses.
Don’t hesitate to consult your doctor if you are severely affected, or if stress begins to disrupt your everyday life.
Always remember to consult your healthcare provider before taking any decisions regarding your health.
A Look at Lifestyle
To go with a holistic stress management process, first get the basics of a healthy, stress free life in place.
Diet
Go for a general wholefood diet:
plenty of fruit and vegetables
plenty of wholegrains and pulses
lean protein – such as fish (especially oily fish) and chicken
Avoid the diet stressors listed above
Check for allergies, food intolerances and nutritional deficiencies
(It's the same test I used to kick start my recovery from M.E. - so I can wholeheartedly recommend it!)
Sorting out the physical stresses on your body, gives your body much more energy to cope with any other worries or stresses you might have, much more calmly and effectively.
Lifestyle
Get enough, good quality sleep.
If insomnia, or other sleep problems, are amongst the symptoms of your stress, try these natural sleep remedies.
Make time to relax and time to do the things you enjoy.
Work
Work can be a major source of stress for most people. And as an external stress or influence, it can be very hard to control.
Try to achieve a realistic work-life balance. Do you live to work, or work to live?

Exercise
You might not really feel like it, or feel like you can fit it into your stressful schedule, but exercise is one of the best things for holistic stress management.
Choose an exercise you enjoy, and try to do a moderate amount, a few time a week.
Start slowly, and try to build up your exercise program gradually.
Try fun exercises - such as sports, or team games with other people.
Try relaxing exercises - such as yoga or t’ai chi, which have aspects of meditation involved.
Try outdoor exercises - such as walking or cycling.
Getting out into nature will really help to relax you, and lift your mood. Try to do your exercise in a park, wood, beach or countryside. The benefits will be huge!
Getting these basics of holistic stress management in place will really give you a good basis to work from…
