You may decide you want to go for: If you want to visit a hypnotherapist, this information will help you to know what to expect, and to get the most out of your hypnosis therapy session… Choosing a hypnotherapist
If you choose to visit a hypnotherapist for your hypnotherapy session, you should take care to choose a trustworthy and reputable practitioner. In most places, anyone can set up as a hypnotherapist, and some have only the very briefest of ‘professional’ training. Please don’t let this put you off though, as hypnosis therapy can actually be very effective. - The effectiveness of hypnotherapy is actually proven by more genuine scientific evidence, than practically any other form of ‘alternative’ or ‘complementary’ therapy.
- Hypnotherapy has proven physical benefits on the body – so can treat actual physical illnesses, as well as emotional or psychological problems.
- Many people report real positive changes with hypnosis therapy – both in their physical and psychological symptoms.
- When choosing your hypnotherapist, make sure you look for a professional hypnotherapist - who concentrates on the therapeutic benefits of hypnosis – rather than someone who describes themselves as just a ’hypnotist’.
- If possible, ask friends or family for a recommendation. Although it is actually just as important to find someone that you:
- feel comfortable with
- completely trust
- and have a good rapport with
- Personally, I don’t feel comfortable going to a hypnotherapist, so I use self help hypnosis downloads from this website. I find them to be extremely effective.
Your First Session
The SessionsGoing into Hypnosis

- Every practitioner has their own special methods to help a patient go into the relaxed but aware state of mind required.
- You will usually be asked to sit or lie comfortably. You will probably close your eyes.
- The hypnotherapist will help you to relax by speaking to you in a slow and soothing voice.
- The practitioner might help you to:
- visualize you are:
- in a safe comfortable place
- walking down a road
- walking down steps
- they might count backwards with you
- or get you to concentrate on a particular spot in the room
- or on a particular object (probably not a swinging pocket watch though!)
- The hypnotherapist waits until you are in the correct relaxed but aware state of mind, where your subconscious mind is receptive to suggestions of new behaviour.
- Then they can explore the problem, perhaps with:
- stories and visualisations
- reliving past experiences and learning new ways to experience the same events
- introducing suggestions of new behaviour
- The practitioner then brings you gradually back to ‘reality’, with the new suggestions firmly implanted in your subconscious.
- There is no need to worry that you might remain or get stuck in a hypnotic trance, or will lose control of your own mind. This does not and will not happen.
- Remember, no hypnotherapist can make the subconscious mind do anything that it does not really want to.
- You may remember everything that has been said in your session, or you may remember very little or nothing at all.
Aftercare- Once the symptoms are at a manageable level, your hypnotherapist may teach you how to self hypnotise yourself. (More about self help hypnosis)
- This is something that you can practice regularly to keep your illness under control.
