Sadly, it is very common to get knee pain – and all too often, it seems to be one of those pains that can easily turn into a recurring pain or a long term ache.

Natural knee pain relief is a good option to choose. All too often, conventional medicine seems to center on masking the pain, by giving painkillers, or reducing inflammation in the knee joint.

This is all well and good when dealing with the more short term causes of knee pain. But, unfortunately, for longer term problems, painkillers do tend to stop working after a while, and can have some pretty unpleasant side effects (Find out more about this, here…)

knee pain relief When this happens (..or even, before it happens!) you can turn to natural health remedies for help and effective knee pain relief…

Always remember to consult your healthcare provider before taking any decisions regarding your health.

What Caused your Knee Pain?

The holistic remedies you choose to help with your knee pain relief do depend on the reasons why your knee is troubling you…

Some common causes of knee pain:

Arthritis

Injury

  • This could be:
    • A strained muscle or sprain
    • Torn cartilage - the knee locks painfully
    • Torn ligament - the knee gives way unexpectedly
    • Dislocated knee cap - the knee collapses completely
  • Consult your doctor for a full diagnosis and advice ASAP in the case of injury.
  • In the case of injuries such as these, you should rest up your knee for a while.
  • Hot and cold compresses can provide effective knee pain relief:
    • Hot compress: Wrap a hot damp (not wet!) towel around the knee
    • Cold compress: Wrap a cold damp (not wet!) towel around the knee
  • Once the severe phase of injury is over, if your knee is still painful, you may benefit from more long term holistic knee pain relief, such as:

    • Acupuncture: Fine needles are inserted at special ’acupoints’ in the body to provide pain relief. Always consult a qualified practitioner.
    • Massage: Gently massage the knee area, to relax the muscles and stimulate healing.
    • Hydrotherapy: Gentle exercise in a hydrotherapy pool can help to build and strength and mobility in the knee joint.
    • Chiropractic and Osteopathy: Manipulation of the muscles around the knee, and of the knee joint itself, can help to sort out any long term sources of knee pain, and strengthen the joint.
    • Magnet Therapy: Wearing a magnetic therapy bracelet, or using magnetic buttons close to the site of the pain, can help to speed up the healing process by making the circulation more effective.

Fibromyalgia

Housemaid’s Knee

  • This is also known as a form of bursitis.
  • Joints are protected by a small ‘sac’ of fluid, which helps the joint to move smoothly, and without pain.
  • In cases of bursitis, the sac becomes overfilled with fluid. This leads to:
    • inflammation
    • pain
    • stiffness
    • heat in the joint
  • Bursitis, or ‘housemaid’s knee’ is usually caused by:
    • over using the knee joint
    • repeated bumping on the knee joint (this is why it is known as ‘Housemaid’s knee’ – from all the kneeling!)
  • It could also be associated with problems with:
  • If you think you have bursitis, or ‘housemaid’s knee’, then you should rest up your knee, and try to avoid any further over use, or pressure or bumps to the knee. If duties such as housework or gardening mean frequent kneeling, then a simple foam kneeling pad can really help.
  • In the first few days, cold compresses will help to reduce the swelling, and provide you with knee pain relief:
    • Soak a towel in ice cold water
    • Wring out and apply to your knee for as long as it feels effective (i.e. cold)
  • As the swelling begins to subside, you can start using hot compresses on your knee:
    • Soak a towel in bearably hot water
    • Wring out and apply to your knee for as long as it feels effective (i.e. hot)
  • You might find massaging around the knee will help it to heal more quickly.
    • Use 50ml of almond oil or olive oil and mix in 5 drops of each of the following essential oils:
      • lavender
      • eucalyptus
      • rosemary
      • juniper
    • Herbal remedies can also help – especially a lotion with Comfrey applied to the knee.

    • Unfortunately, with a bursitis, or ‘housemaid’s knee’, there is a real possibility that the pain may become long term or even permanent. Obviously, this is something you want to avoid, wherever possible.
    • You can help with this by starting to exercise your knee joint very gradually, as soon as the swelling has gone down. Start with just a few minutes gentle movement at a time, and build up from that.
    • If your bursitis refuses to heal, you may need to have it drained by your doctor. Steroid and antibiotics can help to clear any infection or swelling. You may eventually need to have the swelling removed with a small operation.

Hopefully, with the help of natural health remedies to soothe your knee pain, relief can be achieved within a short space of time.

In the future, try to avoid over using your knee, or too much kneeling. A foam kneeling pad can really help to take the pressure off the knee joint, and avoid further cases of knee pain.
