Echinacea
- One of my personal favourite natural cold remedies is Echinacea.
- Some people take a small amount of Echinacea every day, throughout the cold season. Personally, I don’t - I have been advised that you should only take Echinacea non-stop for 8 weeks maximum.
- After 8 weeks you should take a week’s break and restart. If you don’t do this, the herb tends to lose its effectiveness.
- I find Echinacea far more effective as a natural cold remedy, if I take a higher dose as soon as I feel a cold or flu coming on (ex. 150mg up to 6 times a day).
- Echinacea helps your body expel all the germs and toxins that are causing the cold.
- It is likely to make your nose run more.
- You may also feel a little worse to start with – but I promise this does not last long. You do start to feel much better, much faster, in this way.
- Don’t take Echinacea with any other decongestant or ‘over-the-counter’ cold or flu remedy. Echinacea works by making your nose run faster to get rid of the illness.
- Chemist-bought remedies work by stopping the flow/clogging it up. So, if you try to use both, they will just counter-act each other – and neither will work!
- Caution:
- If you allergic to other plants in the ‘daisy’ family, you may also be allergic to Echinacea.
- Do not use of you have an autoimmune disease, such as TB, MS or HIV.

Supplements as Natural Cold Remedies
- These supplements can prove to be great natural cold remedies. You can use them when you feel a cold coming on. Or use them throughout the winter months (or all the time) as an effective, preventative measure.
- Vitamin C
- Don’t bother just stocking up on extra oranges - you would actually need an awful lot to make a real difference.
- Instead, take a high-dose capsule. I take 1000mg per day (as 2 x 500mg capsules) as a preventative dose, and as a general health boost.
- If you do come down with a cold, try 500mg every 2 hours to start – reducing the dose down, as the cold progresses.
- You know you have taken too much Vitamin C if you get a little diarrhoea. If this happens, just reduce the dose a little.
- Zinc
- Zinc is another good supplement to try. Take it just whilst you are ill. Or take it all the time, to feel healthier, and prevent colds from actually starting.

Herbal Teas and Drinks as Natural Cold Remedies
- Ginger Tea
- This is very warming - so avoid it if you have a fever, or are feeling too hot.
- I find it delicious so actually drink it all the time – even without a cold.
- Use ginger tea bags…
- …or, grate a little ginger root into hot water and strain
- Take up to 3 cups a day
- You might also want to add powdered ginger to your food, as a very tasty remedy.
- Lemon and Honey Tea
- A real ‘classic’ drink.
- Just squeeze half a lemon into a cup, and add hot water, and honey to taste.
- This will help to soothe your throat and make your cold feel better.
- Blackcurrant Tea
- For the ‘all-natural’ version, boil blackcurrant berries with honey, then strain and dilute with hot water.
- Or, for an easier version (but probably not quite as good for you) – just dilute blackcurrant squash with hot water.
- Nettle Tea
- Probably the least pleasant-tasting of the drinks, but pretty effective at boosting the body’s natural healing powers.
- Nettle tea bags are widely available from supermarkets and health food stores.
- Hot Toddy
- My fiancé’s favourite of all the natural cold remedies … hmmm, I wonder why…!
- Mix a small amount of whisky with honey and hot water.
- Add a slice of lemon, or some ginger, as you like.
- Very warming - and actually does make you feel heaps better…!

Foot Baths as a Natural Cold Remedy
- Try this very relaxing ginger foot bath
- The heat in the foot bath draws the blood in your body away from your head and towards your feet. This reduces that stuffy, blocked up feeling.
- Use some grated ginger root in hot water, and relax with your feet in the water (don’t allow the water to get cold!).

Chest and Gland Rubs as Natural Cold Remedies
Chest Rub- My mum always used to give chest-rubs to my little brother when he had a cold.
- Being wrapped in brown paper does seem to be traditional – feel free to try it, but I get great results without – and stay crinkle-free too!
- Mix a few drops of one of the following aromatherapy essential oils, with a little almond oil or olive oil:
- peppermint
- tea-tree
- eucalyptus
- chamomile
- lavender
- Rub your mixture firmly but gently into the chest. It should help to break up and move any congestion in the lung area.
Gland Rub - You could also try rubbing the following mixture into glands, to stimulate the body’s own healing response:
- Mix 1-2 drops of eucalyptus oil with
- 1-2 drops of tea-tree essential oil
- 2-3 tablespoons of almond oil or olive oil
- I really like this home cold remedy. My glands are often painful at the start of any illness or cold, and I find this really soothing and beneficial.

Nasal Sprays as Natural Cold Remedies
- A salt water nasal spray is a great sinus infection remedy – or to clear a stuffy and blocked nose.
- It is not overly pleasant – but it is, actually, surprisingly effective.
- You can buy natural, salt water, nasal sprays from some health food shops and pharmacies.
- You can also make your own.
- Boil a cup of water with a half teaspoon of salt
- Allow to cool thoroughly
- Pour into a small spray bottle
- Spray once or twice up each nostril as needed.
