  • Onions
    • Onions are a great, all-round, natural health remedy.
    • They are in the same plant family as garlic, so share a lot of the same healing properties – such as being able to cure viruses and infections.
    • Onions are particularly effective natural cough remedies – so use any that you have in your cupboard!
    • Eat onions - raw is best!
    • Or, stew your onions to make a broth or drink. (Imagine onion soup – the thought makes it less weird to think of drinking onions!) You can add a little honey to sweeten it up if you like – this will also help to soothe your throat and all your passages.
    • P.S. It’s medicine – it’s not supposed to taste nice!
    • Or make a poultice with your onions.

  • Cabbage
    • Crush cabbage leaves, and make a tea with the resulting juice. I must say, this sounds hideous, and I confess that it is not a remedy I have actually tried myself. But apparently, it does work well – and again, you can sweeten it with honey, to make it taste nicer…
    • After you have made one, or both of the above natural flu remedy teas, use the crushed cabbage leaves or the stewed onion to create a poultice to go over the chest.
    • It is probably easiest to soak a piece of cotton or muslin cloth in the cabbage/onion mixture, then apply to the chest until cool (or until you get fed up!)

  • Mullein
    • This is excellent for both dry or chesty coughs.
    • For the best results, take the tincture which can be bought from health food shops and natural health remedies suppliers
    • Or, you can take mullein as a tea:
      • 2 teaspoons of the dried leaves and flowers in a cup of hot water
      • Cover and steep for 10 minutes
      • Drink up to 6 cups a day

  • Plantain
    • This is a great, really gentle but effective herb – that will really help you to stop coughing.
    • Plantain is quite commonly available as a capsule or liquid extract from health food shops and natural health remedies suppliers – and is very effective against coughs.
    • If you prefer a tea use
      • 2 teaspoons of dried plantain leaf in a cup of hot water
      • Steep for 10 minutes
      • Drink up to 4 cups a day.

Natural Cough Remedies for Dry or Tickly Coughs

  • A dry cough is when you cough and nothing comes up. This is bad – as the body needs to get rid of all that nasty infection/phlegm inside your lungs – which it does by coughing!
  • What you need is an expectorant. This gets rid of the phlegm – by loosening it, and allowing you to cough it up.
  • Try:
    • Coltsfoot
    • White Horehound
    • Elecampane Root
    • Eucalyptus
    • Thyme -
      • Thyme is a natural antibiotic (against bacterial infections).
      • It also helps to relax and open airways. This makes breathing easier.
    • Marshmallow -
      • This is very soothing for sore throats and bronchial passages.
      • Buy capsules or the tincture.
      • For a more soothing effect on the throat, make marshmallow tea. In spite of the appetising name, it doesn’t taste that great. Perhaps add some honey, which is very soothing in itself.
      • Use 1 – 3 teaspoons of the dried herb in a cup of hot water
      • Steep for about 5 minutes
      • Drink as required
    • Caution - If you have diabetes or take insulin, consult a doctor before taking Marshmallow.

Natural Cough Remedies for a Chesty Cough

  • A chesty cough is one where you can feel (and hear) the phlegm on your chest. Often you may actually have trouble coughing it up.
  • You still need to get rid of that nasty phlegm though. That is what your body is trying to do itself, every time you cough. Far better out than in though!
  • Ginger Tea
    • Make a ginger tea from some grated ginger root, and cinnamon, in hot water.
    • Steep for 10 – 15 minutes, strain and serve.
    • Drink up to 3 cups a day

  • Steam inhalation
    • Use a bowl of hot, but not boiling, water
    • Sprinkle in some herbs. Good herbs to try for a chesty cough are:
      • Friars Balsam
      • Chamomile
      • Thyme
    • Bend your head over the bowl and cover with a towel
    • Breathe through your mouth to inhale the steam, for as long as you are comfortable.
