Discover Natural Hayfever Remedies that Work...
Is every sunny day a misery of sneezing and itchy eyes? Learn how natural hayfever remedies can help relieve your symptoms. Natural health remedies are gentle and effective, without the nasty side effects of conventional treatments...
I have suffered badly from hayfever every year since I was 7…! It is such a shame to allow hayfever to take over your Summer… We wait for so long for the sunshine, so I desperately want to enjoy being outdoors in the Summer … ...whether in my garden, the fields, parks, gardens or woods and forests…. There is so much to get out and enjoy. Now I use natural hayfever remedies, I don’t need to let the sight of a beautiful Summer meadow, or the sound of a lawn mower starting up, send me rushing indoors for cover…! These days, even the smell of freshly cut grass is only a fragrant reminder of a pleasant Summer’s day – and nothing else! - Hayfever has become more common worldwide.
- Around 1 in 5 of the population suffers
- More and more sufferers seem to be children and young people
- Hayfever is caused by:
- grass pollen
- tree pollen
- flower pollen
Find out more about Pollen , and what you can do to stop your symptoms.

- Common symptoms of hayfever are:
- itchy or runny nose
- Sneezing
- Congestion and blocked sinuses
- Sore or itchy throat
- Sore, itchy and watery eyes
- Itchy or blocked ears
- Headaches
- Asthma
- General tiredness, weakness or feeling ill and under-the-weather
- Emotional upset or irritability
Always remember to consult your healthcare provider before taking any decisions regarding your health.
Conventional Treatments
- Conventional medicines for hayfever can have some pretty unpleasant side effects.
- Common side effects are:
- drowsiness
- dry nose, mouth and throat
- congestion and ‘stuffiness’
- bruising
- bone thinning
- Every Summer I used to feel so ill and I never really knew if it was because of the hayfever, the tablets … or both…!
- Even with the medicines, I still couldn’t be around fields or grass at all ….miserable!
- This makes it all the more remarkable to me – to see my own improvement in symptoms through natural health remedies …. and such a rapid improvement!
- Natural hayfever remedies are now effective, much gentler and tolerated by the body more easily, than harsh, conventional treatments.
The Natural Alternative
- A good place to start is to look at some of the natural allergy remedies. These can help to boost your body’s own natural response to allergens, and help to soothe symptoms.
- My own personal favorite natural hayfever remedy, for my own hayfever, is a high dose of Vitamin C.
- Some natural hayfever remedies, like Vitamin C, should be taken for a long period before the hayfever season even starts.
- Some remedies can be taken just on a particular day, if you feel that your symptoms are bad on that day.
- I like to take long term, natural hayfever remedies, for general improvement in the condition. Then I can ‘top up’ with faster acting remedies, if I ever need them (and some days I still do!).
- Some natural hayfever remedies worth a try: (in no particular order)

Omega 3 Fatty Acids
- This is a long term, preventative remedy. It is very good for your health overall, and not just allergies!
- It is believed that an increase in Omega 3 fatty acids, helps to relieve allergy symptoms.
- You should be careful to keep Omega 3 and 6 quantities in your body in the correct ratio, so take a supplement with both Omega 3 and 6 in it.
- The correct proportions of Omega 6 to Omega 3, are around 2:1.
- I take 2000mg of Evening Primrose Oil Capsules (Omega 6) and 1000mg of Fish Oil Capsules (Omega3) every day, to keep them in the right proportions in my body.
- You can also increase your intake of oily fish, such as salmon and mackerel, or flaxseeds, to increase your intake of the Omega 3 essential fatty acid.

Garlic
- Garlic is excellent for reducing inflammation and mucous production, in the hayfever season.
- Eating a clove of raw garlic every day is ideal. But most people do prefer to take capsules, and now odour free capsules are available, so there really is no excuse!
- Aim for around 4000 – 5000 micrograms of ‘allicin’ (the active ingredient) per day. Read the back of the pack to see what your capsules contain.
- Caution - Consult your doctor if you take any sort of blood thinners, such as warfarin, or if you have any stomach inflammation, or if you are due to have surgery soon.

Salt Water Nasal Spray
- A salt water nasal spray is one of the most effective natural hayfever remedies – and can be used any time your symptoms start.
- You can buy a salt water nasal spray in many health food stores or pharmacies, but it is easy enough to make your own:
- Simply add half a teaspoon of salt to 250ml of boiled water
- When cooled, add to a spray bottle and spray 1-2 times in each nostril, as needed.
- This helps to flush out irritants such as pollen.
- I do find this surprisingly effective, and much gentler on my nose and throat than conventional nasal sprays for hayfever.
- You can also try a neti pot, which does exactly the same job...

Elderflower Tea or Syrup
- This is a very pleasant tasting natural hayfever remedy. (Although personally, I didn’t find it worked well enough for me!)
- Drink elderflower tea or dilute the syrup with warm water. Enjoy up to 3 cups of either per day.

Peppermint
- Peppermint is one of the best natural hayfever remedies, for getting rid of stuffiness and congestion.
- Drinking peppermint tea may help – I drink it everyday, anyway!
- Tea bags are widely available, or you can make your own:
- Use 1 teaspoon of the dried herb in a cup of hot water
- Cover and steep for 10 minutes.
- Strain and drink
- For hayfever, peppermint is probably most effective as a steam inhalation:
- Fill a bowl with hot, but not boiling, water, adding 5 drops of peppermint essential oil, or some menthol crystals.
- Bend your head over the bowl and cover with a towel.
- Inhale the steam through your nose, for as long as possible.
- Caution: Do not take peppermint internally, if you have heartburn or acid reflux.

Homeopathic Natural Hayfever Remedies
- Homeopathic natural hayfever remedies are a real favorite with lots of hayfever sufferers.
- Generally, homeopathic remedies should be taken long term. Start several months before the hayfever season normally begins.
- Consult a qualified homeopath for the best results.
- Homeopathic natural hayfever remedies often make you feel a little bit worse before you begin to feel better. This is because the body starts to rid itself of the toxins that are making you ill, so the accompanying symptoms may temporarily get worse.
- It is for this reason, that I have never really got on with homeopathic hayfever remedies myself. I have tried homeopathic treatments twice (unfortunately without consulting a qualified homeopath). Each time my symptoms have worsened to the extent that I needed emergency medical attention for hayfever-related asthma…
- At this point, I decided that homeopathic remedies for hayfever, although they would most likely ultimately be effective, were not for me!
- Please don’t let this put you off, if you want to try homeopathic remedies for yourself, though. Some natural hayfever remedies, recommended by homeopathic medicine are:
- Allium cepa - especially for a runny nose
- Euphrasia - where the worst symptom is runny and itchy eyes
- Sabadilla - for sneezing, runny nose and red, itchy eyes
- Rhus tox - for an intense, inflamed hayfever

Honeycomb
- Honeycomb is a widely recognised traditional remedy for hayfever.
- My fiancé swears this is one of the best natural hayfever remedies – and it is certainly one of the tastiest!
- You can chew a piece of natural honeycomb when symptoms strike, or chew a little everyday, as a preventative measure.
- You can also take a spoonful of honey every day. Start doing this several months before the hayfever season actually starts.
- You get the best results if you choose a very local honey.

Cucumber Slices
- This is a personal favorite of mine, ever since I was a little girl.
- When your eyes are raw and itching, and you, literally, can’t keep from rubbing them, lie down with a slice of cool cucumber over each eye.
- The slices are very cooling and soothing!
- Just renew with a fresh slice from the fridge, as the slice warms up.
- If you are out somewhere with itchy eyes, you can get a similar (but not quite as effective) soothing action with a piece of tissue soaked in cold, cold water.
- I have tried this at my previous office job – it seemed much more socially acceptable to dab my eyes with this, than with a slice of cucumber…!

Return to the list of hayfever remedies As well as the above natural hayfever remedies, to make life easier on yourself, try the following: - Avoid Summer meadows or freshly mown grass
- Wear large glasses outside, and a hat to keep pollen out of your hair
- It can help if you get changed as soon as you come indoors, to keep your pollen-covered clothes out of your home
- Stay indoors in early evening, when pollen levels are worst. Even close your windows at this time
- You can smear a little petroleum jelly around the inside of your nostrils, to help keep the pollen out
I have actually found, after years of following the above advice, that I no longer need to do these things. The natural hayfever remedies are far more effective for me – even than my old conventional remedies! I hope that they will be for you too, and this Summer you will be able to get out and enjoy the sunshine! Make sure that you also take a look at some of the general cures and natural allergy remedies – for more effective natural hayfever remedies to try… You may also find that some of the natural sinus remedies are helpful, if blocked sinuses, or a congested feeling, are one of your most troubling symptoms.
