There are 2 kinds of Ginseng. Both can be used as very effective natural remedies for stress.
Ginseng is used to support and revive exhausted adrenal glands, for cases of long term, or chronic stress - and should be taken daily over a period of time.
Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)
This helps to restimulate the immune system and can help to improve mental and physical performance under conditions of stress.
Panax Ginseng (Asian, Korean or Chinese Ginseng) (Or Panax Quinquefolius - American Ginseng)
This also helps the body to cope with physical and mental stress, including:
supporting the immune system
relieving fatigue
improving alertness
Most herbal practitioners will recommend taking Ginseng for no more than 3 weeks at a time, followed by a 1 week break. (It is thought that continued use of Ginseng can over-stimulate the system, and may cause fatigue in itself.)
Capsules or tincture are best.
Caution:
Do not exceed stated dose.
Do not take if pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not take if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, insomnia, asthma or high fever.
May interact with caffeine, other stimulants and anti-coagulant drugs
Some people may experience over stimulation – including an upset stomach
Gotu Kola is a traditional Indian Ayurvedic medication, where it is said to improve symptoms of stress and fatigue.
It helps to soothe anxiety and improves memory.
However, this herb is also considered as a stimulant, so it would be wise not to take it long term (or at least take frequent ‘breaks’), and be aware that it may cause over stimulation, in some people.
Take capsules or tincture.
Or make your own tea:
Use 1 teaspoon of the dried herb, in a cupful of hot water
This is one of the best natural remedies for stress, where the stresses have been mainly caused by over-exposure to toxins or alcohol. It works really well at protecting and re-juvenating the liver.
Add the roasted milk thistle seeds to foods, or…
Take capsules or tincture daily, as natural remedies for stress.
Or, make your own tea:
Use 2 teaspoons of dried, powdered seeds, in a cupful of hot water
Kava Kava is one of the best natural remedies for stress, especially nervousness and anxiety.
Kava Kava is better than ‘sedatives’ (such as Valerian) as it does not cause any loss of mental alertness - in fact it may actually improve memory and mental ability.
Kava Kava is very relaxing and soothing. It is especially suitable for short term anxiety and stress.
Capsules or tincture are best.
Caution:
May cause drowsiness
Do not take if pregnant or breastfeeding
Do not take with alcohol, sedatives, anti-depressants or L-dopa
Valerian is a pretty powerful sedative (it works in a similar way to Valium, but is not physically addictive, and does not have the same side effects).
As it is so strong, Valerian is best kept for occasional use only (when you really need it), and for night time use only – it makes a fantastic insomnia cure!
Take capsules or tincture, or make a very effective tea:
Use 1 teaspoon of the dried herb in a cupful of hot water
Steep for 10 minutes
Strain and drink
For night time use drink 1 cup 1 hour before bedtime.
It can also be taken up to once every 2 hours, for acute daytime anxiety.
Caution: May have the opposite effect for some people (typically, I am one of those people!) and cause over stimulation, anxiety or stomach upset.
Camomile is very relaxing, and is one of the best known natural remedies for the stresses and strains of everyday life.
Camomile is very widely available. You can easily buy camomile tea bags in most supermarkets, and enjoy cups of camomile tea throughout the day (up to 3 cups per day).
If you want to make your own tea, use:
1 teaspoon of dried camomile flowers, in a cupful of hot water
Steep for 10 minutes
Strain and drink up to 3 cups per day
Caution: If you are allergic to other members of the daisy family, you may also be allergic to camomile.
