Sleeping should come as naturally as breathing, right…? So why does it sometimes seem so difficult…?

Until the past few months, I suffered for a good few years with insomnia and sleep problems.

Difficulty sleeping is a problem I have had intermittently throughout my whole life – but recently I have been having some of the best and most restful sleeps I can remember since childhood – so hopefully I have cracked it!

I truly believe that natural sleep remedies are the way to go – even if they are not always the ‘quick fix’ that a sleeping pill is….

I was quite surprised to find that out …. And even though I have been prescribed sleeping tablets in the past, I could never quite bring myself to actually take one!

I can manage 2 hours sleep on my own – and sleeping tablets seem to offer very little real benefit, to me - only natural sleep remedies for me please!

Why I Don’t Take Sleeping Tablets

  • Sleeping tablets are fine for short term problems - but, these days, even conventional doctors and GP’s tend to recognise that they are just not suitable as a long term solution
  • It is common, in special cases only, to give sleeping tablets in the short term - just to get the patient back into a normal sleep pattern.
  • But there is a very real danger of addiction!
  • Tolerance to the drugs soon develops – this means that you need to take a larger and larger dose, just to get the same effect…
  • Problems withdrawing from the drugs will be very likely too.
  • Sleeping tablets tend to have a hangover ‘grogginess’ in the morning too – which many people say is just as bad as the feeling tired, from lack of sleep!
  • Other side effects of sleeping tablets are:
    • drowsiness
    • dizziness
    • clumsiness
    • short term memory loss
    • confusion
    • headache
    • nausea

In contrast, natural sleep remedies are much better….

They don’t have the addictive qualities that drugs have – and are just as effective in bringing on a natural, restful sleep.

They don’t have the troublesome side effects either, such as grogginess, confusion and ‘morning hangover’.

Hypersomnia

  • The opposite of insomnia (sleeping too little) is hypersomnia (sleeping too much).
  • Sufferers continually feel tired, lacking in energy and need to sleep for hours and hours during the night, or perhaps during the day.
  • This is often a sign of an underlying illness, or depression - these possible causes should be investigated with your healthcare provider.

Nightmares and Night Terrors

  • It is common enough to have the occasional nightmare.
  • Nightmares only become a problem if they occur frequently, or become a major cause of concern to the sleeper.
  • With children, it is quite common for the fear and anxiety over having a nightmare, to stop the child going to sleep in the first place. It may also trigger a nightmare when they actually do sleep too.
