Don't let an upset stomach ruin your day - treat it safely and easily from home...

Find out how...

I’m sure I don’t need to go into details …. We are all familiar with the symptoms of diarrhea …

Although very unpleasant, for the vast majority of people, diarrhea is short-lived, and not serious …

Most cases of diarrhea do go away on their own!

Diarrhea is the stomach’s own way of getting rid of an irritation. Once it has gone, the balance can return to normal.

Common causes of diarrhea are:

  • food poisoning
  • viruses and bacteria
  • parasites
  • over-eating
  • food allergies or intolerances
  • stress, anxiety or an emotional shock
  • some antibiotics, or other medications

A natural remedy for diarrhea can be used at home, to deal with most bouts of diarrhea.

If you are worried or develop any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor, or healthcare provider, promptly:

  • recurrent diarrhea
  • diarrhea that lasts longer than 3 days
  • painful stomach cramps
  • fever
  • blood, mucous or pain in your stools
  • becoming dehydrated

Take extra care with babies who have diarrhea, especially diarrhea with fever, or loss of appetite.

Conventional Treatments for Diarrhea

  • Conventional diarrhea treatments do not often have severe side effects - however, it is still unwise to use these remedies long term.
  • If you find that you need to use diarrhea remedies frequently, consult your healthcare provider to identify possible causes for your upset stomach.
  • Sometimes antibiotics are used against diarrhea. These are usually only prescribed when essential, but can have unpleasant side effects such as nausea, vomiting, skin rashes and yeast overgrowth (which can, in itself, lead to it’s own stomach problems).

Treatment at Home

  • The best way to treat diarrhea, yourself, at home, is to rest and drink plenty of fluids.
  • This flushes any infection or irritation out – and makes sure you don’t get dehydrated.
  • Getting dehydrated is actually one of the most common reasons for feeling ill, when you have diarrhea.

  • As well as rest and liquids, read this useful dietary advice, for a natural remedy for diarrhea:

    • Avoid all solid food for 24 hours
    • If your diarrhea is only mild, just avoid:
      • whole grain cereals
      • raw fruit and veg
      • fruit juices
      • milk
    • Try a plain diet of boiled rice, or rice pudding, and vegetable soups, as your symptoms improve
    • Eat plenty of cooked fruit and veg as your appetite returns to normal – especially:
      • cooked apples (but not apple juice)
      • cooked carrot
      • cooked blueberries
      • carob
      • unripe bananas
    • Live yogurt is especially recommended as a natural remedy for diarrhea – it contains ‘good bacteria’, which you will need to reintroduce to your gut. This is so that your stomach workings become balanced once again.
    • You could also take a probiotic supplement for the same effect – Look for one containing Lactobacillus acidophilus

  • Garlic is a fantastic natural remedy for diarrhea – it kills viruses, bacteria and parasites.
  • Eating the raw cloves is ideal – or you can take capsules.

  • This is another remedy I really like, as I take it frequently anyway, and always have some in the house.
