Learning to cope well with stress may take a drastic change of attitude to your life and problems, but there are holistic remedies that help to guide you along with this, and make it an easy, gradual process…
One of the most effective ways of managing stress, is by changing your attitude to the things that stress you.
This can be quite difficult to do, but is very effective.
Counselling and C.B.T. (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is quite often recommended by doctors, to treat stress or anxiety, so you may be able to be referred by your doctor.
Counselling and C.B.T. can help to identify your personal stressors and can identify warning triggers.
Therapists can help you interrupt negative stress thought processes, and learn how to choose a different response – that leaves you feeling more relaxed.
Hypnotherapy can take you into a deep state of relaxation, which, when practiced frequently, is very beneficial in itself.
When your mind is in a state of relaxation, it is more receptive to new ideas and suggestions. This is where an experienced hypnotherapist can really help, by offering new suggestions of different ways to react to and to cope with stressful situations.
You should always take sessions with a reputable hypnotherapist (not just a ‘hypnotist’) – ask around for recommendations. You may expect several sessions, to be most effective.
I found self help hypnosis worked well for me – that I could try in the comfort of my own home, when I was feeling more relaxed.
Again, you will probably need to listen to the sessions a number of times, but you should see a slow, steady improvement.
I found these downloads to be very relaxing - and effective too…
Which one of these you choose, very much depends on your own personal preferences - basically, as to which one you enjoy the most …
They all make excellent tips to relax and de-stress and fantastic creative outlets.
Art Therapy
Self expression, through art, helps people to get in touch with their inner thoughts and feelings.
It can also be a very useful outlet for frustration and negativity.
Rather than just getting artistic on your own, at home, or joining a local art class, art may work better as a holistic stress management technique, if you actually attend sessions with a qualified art therapist.
Here, the focus is on the therapeutic benefits, not on the artistic merit, and there is no pressure to ‘perform’ or ‘get it right’.
Music Therapy
Musical knowledge is definitely not necessary to get help from music therapy.
If you attend formal sessions, your therapist will help you to explore your emotions and creativity through music.
But music can actually be one of the easiest tips to relax … just listening to music you enjoy, on your own at home, can be very effective holistic stress management, and really helps you to relax.
Why not try a CD of music specially formulated to help you relax and de-stress, or search for some other music you enjoy…
Dance Therapy
Dance Therapy can be done individually and informally - just at home, at a dance class, or in a club, with friends.
Or you can do it more formally in a therapy session.
If you like a physical outlet for pent up stress and emotion, then dance therapy may be one of your best tips to relax!
The key is to choose the therapy that feels right for you!
The exercises and postures help to focus body and mind, control your breathing, and help you to relax.
You can practice both forms of meditation on your own, at home, if you prefer, with the aid of self-help books and DVD’s. Both will need to be practiced often, to get the most longlasting benefits.
You will actually get the best results if you combine your ‘at-home’ work with sessions with an experienced teacher, who can guide you best, through all the postures and techniques, and make sure you get the most appropriate relaxation and stress management from your sessions.
Basically, reflexology works on points on the soles of the foot, to treat illnesses elsewhere in the body.
Reflexology is more than just a foot massage (although a foot massage in itself is very relaxing).
Zones in the feet – ‘reflex areas’ are thought to mirror various parts of the body. Tender spots on the reflex areas relate to problems in particular areas of the body.
Skilful massage in the appropriate part of the foot, can help to unblock specific ‘energy channels’, and allow the body to get back into a balanced state.
In medical trials, reflexology actually showed patients had decreased levels of anxiety and stress.
The best results can be achieved from a series of sessions with a qualified therapist.
